The Good Samaritan illustrates how that the Lord Jesus, on His return, will reward those who have treated well His beloved.

“Whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee,” verse 35.

I. THE LORD KEEPS ACCOUNT OF HOW HIS PEOPLE ARE TREATED
Matt 25:31-46. Note verses 34-40. “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me,” verse 40. Kindness toward another Christian is counted as an act of kindness shown to the Lord Himself. See how closely He is identified with His people!
“Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” Acts 9:4.

II. HE WILL RETURN TO REWARD HIS ENEMIES.
The Saviour will also deal with the robbers who have beset His people over the ages.
“For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works,” Matthew 16:27.
“I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings,” Jeremiah 17:10.
“According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies,” Isaiah 59:18.
“Who will render to every man according to his deeds:” Romans 2:6
“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” Rev 20:12.

III. HE WILL RETURN TO BE REUNITED WITH THE ONE HE DID SO MUCH TO HELP
It is the wellbeing of the injured man that brought the Samaritan back. There has been a wonderful union formed between the Saviour and His people so that Christ cannot be separated from them but must be re-united with them again and that for ever.
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also,” John 14:3. Heaven would be incomplete without God’s redeemed people.
“Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me,” John 17:24.
“And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God,” Rev 21:3.
“Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord,” 1 Thess 4:17.

There is one little phrase that we must yet examine. “And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee,” verse 35. The Samaritan had to continue on his journey but he made provision for the injured Jew. He paid for his care.

I. HOW OFTEN THE LORD JESUS HAD TO JOURNEY ON
“And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth,” Mark 1:38. The Saviour was searching for His elect. “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost,” Luke 19:10.

II. HE PROMISED TO RETURN
Though departed, he did not forget the injured Jew.
So it is with the Lord Jesus. “Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven,” Acts 1:11.
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also,” John 14:3.
He did not say how long he would be away. Neither has our Saviour BUT, He has given us some indications of the time involved in some parables He told.
“But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken,” Luke 12:45.
Note also Matthew 25:14-30. “Far”, verse 14; “Long time”, verse 19.
Another parable teaches the same. “Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time,” Luke 20:9.
Those “hints” I am sure would have been repeated many times.

III. HE PROMISED TO RETURN TO THE SAME PLACE
“Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south,” Zechariah 14:1-4.

The Good Samaritan – Part 6 – Luke 10:25-37.

We have already mentioned the “Compassion” Good Samaritan and how he ”Came” to the man. Now please consider:

HE CARED FOR THE MAN
“And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him,” Luke 10:34.

1. He countered the actions of the robbers. They had opened the wounds and started the bleeding. He tended the wounds and stopped the bleeding. “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds,” Psa 147:3. 1 John 3:5, Heb 9:26.

2. He soothed and cleansed his wounds. That is what the oil and wine (the produce of Canaan, a picture of the blessings of heaven) would do.
Notice he had these items with him! Christ possesses all that is needed for our healing. He is the “Great Physician”, He is “The Balm of Gilead” – Jeremiah 8:22. “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” See also Luke 5:31; Isa 53:5; 1 Pet 2:24.

3. He continued to help and succour him. Verses 34-35. He ‘set him’, ‘brought him’, ‘cared for him’. He stayed overnight with him and then appointed a carer to look after him.
That is what the duly appointed officers of the church are. 1 Tim 3:2-5, Acts 20:20.

Peace like a river is flooding my soul,
Since Christ, my Saviour, maketh me whole;
Sweet peace abiding my portion shall be;
Jesus, my Saviour, is precious to me.

4. He asked nothing of him. He bore the cost of the man’s recovery! He paid for ongoing care. Isaiah 55:1-2.

Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.
