The Good Samaritan – Part 6 – Luke 10:25-37.

We have already mentioned the “Compassion” Good Samaritan and how he ”Came” to the man. Now please consider:

HE CARED FOR THE MAN
“And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him,” Luke 10:34.

1. He countered the actions of the robbers. They had opened the wounds and started the bleeding. He tended the wounds and stopped the bleeding. “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds,” Psa 147:3. 1 John 3:5, Heb 9:26.

2. He soothed and cleansed his wounds. That is what the oil and wine (the produce of Canaan, a picture of the blessings of heaven) would do.
Notice he had these items with him! Christ possesses all that is needed for our healing. He is the “Great Physician”, He is “The Balm of Gilead” – Jeremiah 8:22. “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” See also Luke 5:31; Isa 53:5; 1 Pet 2:24.

3. He continued to help and succour him. Verses 34-35. He ‘set him’, ‘brought him’, ‘cared for him’. He stayed overnight with him and then appointed a carer to look after him.
That is what the duly appointed officers of the church are. 1 Tim 3:2-5, Acts 20:20.

Peace like a river is flooding my soul,
Since Christ, my Saviour, maketh me whole;
Sweet peace abiding my portion shall be;
Jesus, my Saviour, is precious to me.

4. He asked nothing of him. He bore the cost of the man’s recovery! He paid for ongoing care. Isaiah 55:1-2.

Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

I wish to examine a little more closely the actions of the Good Samaritan with us ever bearing in mind that he is for us a wonderful picture of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1. HE HAD COMPASSION FOR THE INJURED MAN

“But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,” Luke 10:33.
That was totally absent from the hearts of the priest and the Levite.
The Samaritan’s heart was “moved, stirred with pity and concern” for the man.

The hymn says:

There is no love like the love of Jesus,
Never to fade or fall,
Till into the rest of the house of God
He has gathered us all.

There is no heart like the heart of Jesus,
Filled with a tender love;
No throb nor throe that our hearts can know;
But He feels it above.

There is no eye like the eye of Jesus,
Piercing so far away;
Ne’er out of the sight of its tender light
Can the wanderer stray.

“Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not,” Luke 7:12-13.

He not only spoke but He acted and raised her son and so removed her sorrow!

“And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge,” Eph 3:19. It cannot be known without divine help!

“In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins,” 1 John 4:9-10.

II. HE CAME TO THE INJURED MAN

That only took only a few steps for the Samaritan but what a journey for the Saviour! See Php 2:6-11. Please read these verses and that many, many times.

“As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men,” Isa 52:14. “But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people,” Psa 22:6. “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not,” Isa 53:3. “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God,” Heb 12:2.

1. There was little help for the poor wounded traveller. “And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side,” verses 31 and 32.
The word “chance” means “by accident”! They stumbled upon the man. They had no intention of going to him to help!
Mere religion has nothing to offer the poor sinner! Rather it exists to benefit from he sinner!  The priest and the Levite would have been happy to see the man in the temple and have taken from him his gifts and offerings but they had nothing for him in his hour of need!

2. Help came from a very unexpected source. “But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him,” verses 33-34. 3. Seven things about the deliverer.

a. He was a Samaritan. How despised was the Samaritan in the yes of the Jew. “He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?” John 8:47-48. The Samaritan was as a ‘devil’!!

b. He felt differently toward the man.

c. He acted differently from the levite and priest.

d. He placed himself in danger. Is that not what jesus did for us?

e. He picked him up and carried him to safety. “And  . . . . set him on his own beast,” verese 34. He place him where he had been seated. “ . . . they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years,” Revelation 20:6. That is how high Christ will lift us up!

f. He covered all his costs.

g. He promised to return for him. Praise God jesus is coming again one day! Back for us individually. “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord,” 1 Thessalonians 4:17.
